Commission surveillance of Telekom Austria

Brussels, 26/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - The Commission is of the opinion that the dominant Austrian telecom operator, Telekom Austria, is not complying with EU telecom rules. Consequently, in a letter dated Thursday 25 July, it suspended a proposal from the Austrian telecoms regulator (TKK) regarding the calculation of regulated fees charged by Telekom Austria. Neelie Kroes, the European commissioner for the Digital Agenda, has said: “The inconsistent access prices across the EU have a dampening effect on investment in modern networks. TKK's proposal must give national and multinational operators the right incentive to replace the old legacy copper network with modern technology, and provide stability and predictability”. The Austrian regulator will have three weeks in which to give its response to the European Commission. (MD/transl.jl)
