Luxembourg, 24/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - Welcoming the “historic” elections of May 2013, “which marked the strengthening of democracy in Pakistan”, the EU Foreign Affairs Council agreed, on 24 June, “that it is important that close and continuing contacts with the new government in Pakistan should be pursued as soon as possible, including the resumption of the EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue”, and trade cooperation. In their conclusions, the foreign affairs ministers welcome the commitment of the new government to tackle economic, financial and energy reform, and they say they are ready to give technical assistance. The ministers encourage Islamabad to respond to concerns about the respect and promotion of human rights. Noting the continued terrorist attacks with concern, the Council reiterates its “unequivocal” commitment to work with Pakistan on the common threat of terrorism. The EU also welcomes the signals sent by the Pakistani government to prioritise improving relations with India, and it encourages the Pakistani government's role on Afghaistan. (CG/transl.fl)
