11/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - EU condemns clashes. On 10 June, the European Union “strongly” condemned the clashes in Lebanon in a tweet from the European External Action Service (EEAS). “The EU supports all the Lebanese authorities, in particular the Lebanese Armed Forces working for stability”, the EEAS added. “The EU remains deeply concerned by the spillover effect of the Syrian crisis in neighbouring countries and supports their efforts to contain it”, stated the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton. The Syrian conflict has been spreading to Lebanon since the Lebanese movement Hezbollah announced that it was involved in the fighting in Syria, with clashes between rebel supporters and Hezbollah supporters. On 9 June, for example, a demonstrator was killed by a bullet in the back close to the Embassy of Iran in Beirut. The demonstrator was protesting against Hezbollah's involvement in the conflict.
