EU calls for reference number issue to be resolved

Strasbourg, 10/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 7 June, the head of the European Union delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Peter Sorensen, called on the Bosnian leaders to work in the interest of the citizens and to find a solution to the issue of the single reference number for registering new-born babies, after a demonstration the previous day. This demonstration “was a clear demand on elected officials in BiH at all levels to do what they have been elected to do - work in the interests of the citizens”, he stated. He said that it was necessary above all to find a definitive solution to the issue of the single reference number and to accelerate the efforts to bring this about. On 6 June, thousands of protesters blocked the parliament to criticise the political disagreement on the 13-figure identification numbers given to each citizen - a disagreement that has prevented the registration of new-born babies for months. The government concluded a provisional agreement on 5 June, for six months, but the demonstrators want a permanent solution. (CG/transl.fl)
