Brussels, 10/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - In 2012, the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) of the EU proved its worth, with the number of notifications down, the triggering of rapid alerts in the event of a food risk being detected and 50% of notifications relating to food or feed rejected at the borders of the EU, the European Commission stressed on Monday 11 June, when the annual RASFF report was published. Tonio Borg stated that he intended to extend the RASSF to food fraud and is not ruling out a second battery of tests in the EU to detect phenylbutazone in horsemeat, following the tests carried out in March 2013. In 2012, of 8,697 notifications (compared to 9,157 the previous year), just 526 (compared to 617 in 2011) concerned major risks, constituting a reduction of 14% in one year.
