Brussels, 28/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - European Council President Herman Van Rompuy met Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan in Brussels on Monday. After the meeting, Van Rompuy spoke of Europe's commitment to Libya, a country in full political transition that is facing major security challenges.
He underlined the important role that the EU and its member states have played in this respect since the revolution, saying very constructive talks have been held on the state of strong bilateral relations established since then. He went on to underline the key priorities which include the government's organisation of an election to vote in a constitutional council and to ensure security in the country and at its borders, as well as the safety of diplomatic representations in Libya. The EU president said Libya will be able to count on full support from Europe, adding that he trusted the constitutional text would develop respect of primacy of law and of human rights, and also provide a sound base on which to build a prosperous society for all Libyans.
Van Rompuy also stressed the importance of having good neighbourly relations with countries at Libya's borders, saying safe borders will contribute to both internal and external stability and peace in the region as a whole. Addressing Ali Zeidan, he evoked the EU's support for security through the deployment of the EU border assistance mission aimed at strengthening Libyan border management capabilities. (FB/transl.jl)
