Füle says swift reforms must take place

Brussels, 16/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 16 May, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle called on Montenegro to make progress in its reforms. Although the “accession negotiations, including the screening process, are progressing well”, he said that it is important to maintain “momentum on the implementation of the necessary reforms”. “Progress in the accession negotiations now requires swift adoption of constitutional amendments strengthening the independence and accountability of the judiciary, as recommended by the Venice Commission”, Füle said during his meeting with the leader of the parliament in Montenegro, Ranko Krivokapic. Füle added that the “Montenegrin parliament plays a central role in strengthening public trust in the country's institutions” - trust which is one of the country's challenges.

Füle called on Podgorica to resolve its political problems, explaining that the number of problems is accumulating on the political front and that the time has come to remedy them. He highlighted the blockage of reforms, and the need to ensure the rule of law and strengthen good judicial follow up. (CG/transl.fl)
