14/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - Mittal wants action against Chinese steel. On Monday 13 May, the European Commission played for time after the call of the Indian steel giant, Mittal, for EU action against imports of Chinese steel. “If Mr Mittal consults with the European steel industry and compiles a file with proof, then we will see”, Commission staff said, quoted by AFP, after the call launched by the head of the ArcelorMittal group, Lakshmi Mittal. Mittal's call, published by the Financial Times, is for higher customs duties on imports of Chinese steel so as to protect the European industry from the competition of countries where environmental standards are weak. European Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship Antonio Tajani will bring forward his strategy for the European steel industry at the beginning of June. (EH/transl.fl)
