Brussels, 27/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - In discussion with the commissioner for industry, Antonio Tajani, on European tourism policy, MEPS on the committee on transport and industry at the European Parliament pointed out how important it was to simplify the current visa policy in order to promote growth and create jobs in the sector. Tajani announced that a proposal on a European tourism quality label would be presented between April and May. That label should allow Europe to market itself as a quality destination and create a reference point for third country nationals who are unfamiliar with the various labels used in EU countries. The question of seasonal tourism was also tackled, including the need to present offers outside the peak tourist season. There are many advantages to this: - tourist establishments remain active continually at off-peak times, people who are less well-off can take advantage of better prices, the elderly can receive a more personalised service, and the young have new job possibilities - not to mention the positive impact that this would have on the environment. MEPs also spoke of the importance of ensuring safety and quality in hotels and other tourist establishments as well as accessibility for persons with disabilities. In Vilnius on 17 and 18 November, Tajani will present a mid-term review of European tourism policy. He also announced his priorities for action in 2013 to: 1) increase cooperation with managers and local entities; 2) develop top quality itineraries for people with disabilities; 3) create a climate that is more favourable for adopting initiatives for training people working in the tourism sector; and 4) disseminate information on accessibility and encourage the increased use of innovative practices for more sustainable products and services.
