EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) north korea

25/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - EU welcomes the adoption of a resolution on violation of human rights. On 22 March, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton welcomed the adoption by consensus in the United Nations Human Rights Council the previous day of a resolution presented by the EU and Japan on setting up a commission of inquiry into the serious and persistent violations of human rights in North Korea. The spokesperson underlined “the gravity and chronic nature of the violations” in North Korea and “the persistent refusal of its authorities to cooperate with the UN Special Rapporteur”. He added that the human rights situation in North Korea is not acceptable and that the EU remains “deeply concerned” about it. He reiterated that the EU has repeatedly supported the relevant resolutions in the Human Rights Council and brought the Security Council's attention to this situation. (CG/transl.fl)
