EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) syria

19/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - Washington not opposed to lifting of arms embargo. On Monday 18 March, US Secretary of State John Kerry stated that the United States is not opposed to the lifting of the arms embargo in Syria for the opposition. “President Obama has clearly said that the United States does not stand in the way of the countries that have made a decision to provide arms, whether it's France, Britain or others”, he said. He added that Obama thinks that it is necessary to change the deal for the Syrian president. Kerry stated that Obama “is evaluating and will continue to evaluate any additional options available to make that happen”. Like the EU until now, the United States has supplied humanitarian aid and non-lethal aid to the opposition, but not arms. (CG/transl.fl)
