Action needed on Single Market Act

Brussels, 14/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - In order to make a success of the European Summit on jobs and growth, the member states would do well to focus on what they promised two yaers ago, such as their pledge to introduce the 12 priorities listed by the European Commission in April 2011 for the Single Market Act, that aim to boost EU competitiveness. Last week, the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, reminded heads of state of this and urged them to finally reach agrement on the Single Market Act, most of which was supposed to have been introduced at the end of last year. Meanwhile, a new Single Market Act has been introduced, with a further dozen measures to be discussed by the member states. For the first version, although some progress has been made, like the launch of European patents and finalising talks on recognition of professional qualifications and public tender agreements, several issues remain in the doldrums that are supposed to give consumers confidence in the digital market, along with provisions on energy taxation, the common consolidated tax basis for company tax and rules on the secondment of workers. In a letter dated 8 March 2013, Van Rompuy urged member states to be flexible and compromise to get the ball rolling. Time is particularly of the essence because work on the second Single Market Act has now begun, but Van Rompuy explained that the EU economy desperately needs these measures to stimulate growth.
