Brussels, 27/02/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 27 February, the European Commission announced that a council of 15 experts tasked with directly advising its President, José Manuel Durão Barroso, on how to shape European policies in favour of scientific and technological innovation and those based largely on scientific evidence was to be set up on that day.
The committee differs from the usual consultative bodies in that the scope of its activities is broader. It will work proactively, identifying topics of interest to support future growth and development in Europe. These experts, who have been selected by Barroso and by Professor Anne Glover, the Commission's Chief Scientific Adviser (see EUROPE 10509), come from the worlds of academia and industry.
The list of the 15 people selected is as follows: Alan Atkisson (Sweden), Ferdinando Beccalli-Falco (Italy), Victor De Lorenzo (Spain), Tamás F. Freund (Hungary), Susan M. Gasser (Switzerland), Soren Molin (Denmark), Joanna Pininska (Poland), Alexandre Tiedtke Quintanilha (Portugal), Ortwin Renn (Germany), Riitta Salmelin (Finland), Pat Sandra (Belgium), Hans-Joachim Schellnhuber (Germany), Roberta Sessoli (Italy), Cedric Villani (France) and Ada E. Yonath (Israel). (MB/transl.fl)
