27/02/2013 (Agence Europe) - Fisheries agreement: Polisario Front demands that negotiations be suspended. The Sahara based Polisario movement has sent a letter to the Commissioner responsible for fisheries, Maria Damanaki, demanding the suspension of negotiations for an EU/Morocco fisheries agreement (see other article). A press release published on 25 February, argued this suspension was “indispensable due to Morocco's persistent violations of the Saharan people's rights and the illegal plunder of the natural resources of the Western Sahara”. Morocco particularly contests the accusation of plundering resources and points to its efforts to develop this disputed territory and build port infrastructure. It is calling for an agreement on autonomy, which has also received the support of a delegation of MEPs, headed by Gilles Pargneaux (S&D, France), which visited the region at the beginning of February.
