Brussels, 20/02/2013 (Agence Europe) - In June, the European Commission will publish the results of a survey on employment in the new technologies sector in Europe. It will particularly highlight the under-representation of women in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector at a time when a deficit of qualified people looms on the horizon for 2015 (there could be a shortage of 700,000 jobs in the sector). Currently, 7 million people work in the European digital sector - a sector which creates 120,000 new jobs every year. However, women only represent 30% of the workforce and most of them have positions without great responsibility. The European Commission will take advantage of the publication of this survey to encourage women to embrace a career in the digital sector. “My motto, my dream, my bumper sticker is to get every European digital and my ambition is to get more women into ICT”, European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes said. According to the Commission, the reason for the lack of women in the digital sector is that there is generally a decrease in the umber of IT graduates in Europe, and also that young girls do not choose this subject when starting higher education.
