EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) egypt

31/01/2013 (Agence Europe) - European leaders call for dialogue. On 31 January - ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council - the Dutch minister for foreign affairs called for dialogue in Egypt. He called on the opposition, Amr Moussa and Mohamed ElBaradei, to accept President Morsi's offer of discussion and not to demand unreasonable conditions. In the Dutch minister's view, the EU should urge Morsi to be restrained in his reaction to the violence. Didier Reynders, the Belgian foreign minister, stated that the EU is currently in the process of assessing the situation. High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton stated that the EU is in “constant touch” with the president and some opposition groups, thanks to the EU's delegation on the ground. In Berlin the previous day, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Morsi to hold a dialogue with the different political forces. (CG/transl.fl)
