Transparency of agricultural aid takes a hit

Brussels, 24/01/2013 (Agence Europe) - The identity of farmers receiving European subsidies and the amounts they receive must not be revealed, the European Parliament's agriculture committee judged on Thursday 24 January at a vote on funding the common agricultural policy (CAP).

The S&D Group regrets the suppression of its proposal aiming to ensure transparency on the beneficiaries of CAP aid. The amendments in question were put down inter alia by the rapporteur Giovanni La Via (EPP, Italy).

The agriculture committee rejected the European Commission's proposal aiming at more transparency - with the result that the name (of the farmer), the place (of his farm), the amount received and the type of aid will not be published. Following a judgment from the Court of Justice in November 2010, the publication of the name of people receiving Community agricultural aid is forbidden. In September 2012, the Commission proposed preserving the anonymity just of small farmers. (LC/transl.fl)
