Brussels, 14/01/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 14 January, Downing Street announced that British Prime Minister David Cameron (who is intending to renegotiate his country's relationship with the EU) would give his eagerly awaited speech on the EU on 18 January, in the Netherlands. On Monday, Cameron rejected the idea that he was “blackmailing” his European partners or that he was adopting a “dangerous” approach. He said that like all other European countries, Great Britain had the perfect right to say what changes were necessary. Attempts by the United Kingdom to recover powers at the expense of the EU have not gone down well with some of the country's European partners. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaüble warned the UK against trying to use blackmail. British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, however, said on Friday that the EU had to change if it wanted the United Kingdom to remain a member. (LC/transl.fl)
