Brussels, 14/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - Energy ministers from the EU and the Mediterranean, who met in Paphos (Cyprus) on 13 December under Cypriot presidency and in the presence of European Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger, unanimously adopted a joint declaration on their resolve to start strengthening cooperation on energy.
In their declaration, they recalled the importance of partner countries in ensuring the supply of oil and gas to Europe and at the same time they underlined the need to protect the environment and to pay attention to safety in general in the production of off-shore energy.
“The discovery of hydrocarbon reserves in the Southeastern Mediterranean region creates new prospects for peace and prosperity for our peoples, but also for the diversification and enhancement of our cooperation”, said Neoklis Sylikiotis, the Cypriot minister for trade, industry and tourism, who is responsible for energy.
