Structural funds in Campania face trouble

Brussels, 03/12/2012 (Agence Europe) - The operational programme for the Italian region of Campania is running the risk of automatic decommitment with regard to European Social Fund (ESF) commitments if it fails to certify the use of €56 million for this month.

On Friday 30 November, the European Commissioner for social affairs, Laszlo Andor, indicated on Twitter, that given the serious regional difficulties, particularly unemployment, better use of funding should be ensured. The pace of programme implementation, with a budget of more than €1 billion, is proving slow. Only 40.1% of commitments will have been implemented and barely 16.15% of payments. The region will need to certify €56 million to the European Commission at the end of the year. Campania looks like ending up at the bottom of the class, despite a task force set up to sort out problems there, which consists of regional environmental experts, Italian ministers and the Commission.
