20/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - Ashton calls for reintroduction of moratorium on executions. Deeply regretting the execution of a Pakistani soldier, Muhammed Hussain, on 15 November in a prison in Punjab province, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton called on the Pakistani authorities on 16 November to reintroduce the moratorium on executions. Indeed, this execution “breaks the de facto moratorium observed by Pakistan for the past four years and goes against the global abolitionist trend”, Ashton said. “It also undercuts the recent announcement by the government, raising the possibility of introducing legislation to abolish the death penalty”, she added.
