Brussels, 20/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - Condemning the bomb attack in Beirut on 19 October, which left three people dead - including Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan, the head of the information branch of the Interior Security Forces - and wounded many others, the EU foreign affairs ministers called on 19 November for this attack and other acts of violence to “be fully investigated”, and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice swiftly. “Impunity and political violence cannot be tolerated in a democratic society”, the Council says in its conclusions.
The ministers underline the importance of “preserving Lebanon's national unity and stability” and encourage “all political forces to participate constructively in the dialogue efforts”. They recall the importance of strong, independent and democratic public institutions, and say that “their continued work is essential for preserving stability and unity in Lebanon”. The Council encourages Lebanon to pursue its reform process, “including in view of the 2013 parliamentary elections”. The EU also welcomes the efforts of the Lebanese security forces to ensure security for all the population, with due respect for the rule of law and human rights.
Condemning the repeated incursions of Syrian forces into Lebanese territory, the heads of diplomacy underline the importance of Lebanon's efforts to avoid the spill-over of violence from Syria. They also welcome Lebanon's support to the people fleeing violence in Syria. (CG/transl.fl)
