Operators respond after 'Bwin' incident

Brussels, 19/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - European online betting and gaming operators have protested to the European Commission following the arrest of one of their members, Norbert Teufelferger, the head of the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA). Sector operators sent a letter to the Financial Times, in which they urged the Commission to take action against gaming regulation methods in Belgium, explained the British newspaper. The Commission is being called on to apply the law in Belgium, as in Greece and elsewhere, added the British daily.

Last Thursday, the co-president of the Austrian gaming operator, Bwin, was arrested by the Belgian police while attending a colloquy on responsible gaming but was released shortly afterwards. Bwin is deemed illegal in Belgium and has no authorisation. It is accused of having operated illegally on the Belgian market through different sites on a blacklist drawn up by the Belgian regulator.
