EP wants to shed light on 'shadow banking'

Brussels, 19/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament is pleading in favour of increased transparency of the activities of the shadow banking system (EUROPE 10605). In its adoption, this Tuesday 20 November, of the position of its committee on economic and monetary affairs on 'shadow banking', it suggests the creation and management, possibly by the ECB, of a centralised database on repurchase operations in euros, or in all monetary units. The MEPs called on the European Commission to adopt, in early 2013, a consistent method for the central gathering of data. In order to fight the systemic risks related to 'shadow banking', which represents more than 25% of the international financial system, the EP is arguing in favour of improved information on off-balance sheet financial assets, plugging the gaps in international financial information standards. It also approves the planned extension to certain entities of the shadow banking system of certain provisions of the regulatory framework reinforcing the quality and quantity of bank capital ('CRD IV' package). It also calls for measures on the structure of the banking sector on the basis of the 'Liikanen' report, which argues in favour of isolating risky trading activities from traditional bank activities (EUROPE 10701).
