Greens support new “European paradigm” for migration/integration

Brussels, 15/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - The Greens/EFA would like to set up a different immigration and mobility policy in Europe and on Wednesday 15 November at a European Parliament conference, it sketched out a few outlines in this connection. The conference was introduced by the leader of the group, Daniel Cohn-Bendit. It sought to examine a new “European paradigm” in terms of integration and participants also looked at ways of optimising support for migrants in European countries and how to enhance their integration through increasing their rights, particularly in the social field. In their working document, the Greens/EFA provide factual information and explain that in a context where the fear of integration, islamophobia and nationalist rhetoric are prevailing themes within certain governments, the Greens are proposing the deconstruction of stereotypes and prejudice. Countries like Spain began taking in immigrants over the past decade but are now becoming countries of emigration again, due to the severity of the crisis, the Greens/EFA explain. They also point out that the majority of so-called illegal immigrants did in fact enter the EU legally. In these circumstances, the Parliamentary group emphasised that the EU could strive to provide better conditions to these migrants by strengthening their rights, wages and working conditions, for example, and by ensuring equality with European nationals. The Greens/EFA also looked at ways to improve mobility with, for example, granting multi-entry visas more frequently and investing in integration policies through the use of structural funds, for example.
