Strengthening political and cooperation dialogue

Cairo, 14/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - On 13 November - during the 2nd EU-Arab League meeting in Cairo - European ministers and representatives agreed to further develop the structured political dialogue between the EU and the Arab League at all levels, and they hailed the new strengthened relationship. They want to work together to meet the common political and economic challenges, and say that developing and strengthening their relationship will contribute to regional security. The next meeting will take place in 2014.

In their conclusions, the ministers point out the importance of developing their bilateral cooperation with tangible projects. They take note of the recommendations of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and of Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil El Araby, in support of a work programme on bilateral cooperation - including in the areas of energy, culture, empowerment of women, human rights, humanitarian aid, crisis management and the electoral process.

The ministers also want to promote trade exchanges and investment opportunities between the two parties, and have agreed to cooperate in order to freeze and recover the funds and assets that have been embezzled or are the object of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The ministers also call on the European Parliament and the Arab parliament to strengthen their communication. (CG/transl.fl)
