MEPs criticise shortcomings in fundamental rights

Brussels, 07/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - In their adoption, on 6 November, of the report by Monika Flasíkova Benova (S&D, Slovakia) on the state of the fundamental rights, the MEPs of the committee on civil liberties of the European Parliament took note of violations of the rights of migrants, LGTB people, women and minorities such as the Roma which continue to exist in the EU. The MEPs call on the EU27 and the Commission to do more to ensure that fundamental rights “are fully respected in Europe”. They call on the member states to allow speakers of minority languages to use their mother tongue, and lament the fact that citizens of Roma origin have been the victims of collective expulsions by member states. They also stress the “the many gaps found in most of the Roma integration strategies presented by member states to the Commission” and call on the national governments to allocate “sufficient resources to meet the aims of these strategies”. Additionally, the MEPs “strongly condemn the extensive use in the EU of detention to ease the removal of immigrants … and call on member states to provide alternatives to detention under national legislation”. They also stress that access to care services is a fundamental right. The countries of the EU are also called upon to “set specific employment targets and strategies to close the pay and pension gaps between women and men”. Lastly, the MEPs also take the view that the Commission and Council should act “more forcefully” against all forms of discrimination based on sexual orientation. (SP/transl.fl)
