Brussels, 05/11/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Saturday 3 November, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Füle urged the Ukrainian authorities and all parties concerned to take the necessary measures to finalise the tabulation of votes so that the definitive results of the parliamentary elections of 28 October can be announced rapidly. Indeed, they note “with growing concern” that the consolidated results have still not been announced. These results “should reflect the genuine will of the Ukrainian voters”, they add.
Ashton and Füle also want complaints regarding the elections to be dealt with “swiftly and in full respect of rules and established procedures”.
According to the partial preliminary results, President Victor Yanukovich's party of the regions is in the lead with 35%, followed by the alliance close to the former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, with 22% and the communists with 15% of the votes (see EUROPE 10720 and 10721). Tymoshenko's party and the Ukrainian democratic alliance for reform (Udar) believe the elections were rigged. (CG/transl.fl)
