Brussels, 31/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission wants to speed up information exchange in the transport sector. It is launching a public consultation on the e-Freight initiative, contained in the White Paper for Transport. E-freight seeks to foster a framework for information exchange between the different actors in the logistical chain, combining provisions on administrative and legislative initiatives and governance. It is hoped that this will contribute towards developing a more efficient freight transport system and facilitate the use of international multimodal transport. It will also allow for entering information only once in the whole logistics chain and retrieving information on vehicle position and network status and develop a structure for the use of information coming from tracking and tracing technologies, as well as for intelligent cargo applications. Stakeholders will be able to provide their comments or opinions to the European Commission, so that the latter is able to better formulate future action necessary for putting in place this e-Freight service. This public consultation is open until 17 January next. (MD/transl.fl)
