Brussels, 30/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has called on the 27 to act together given the increasing number of problems in EU-Russia relations in the field of transport. The Commission informed the European Transport Ministers, meeting in Council in Luxembourg on Monday 29 October, of these issues. Russia had agreed to stop levying taxes on overflights of Siberia, but against the backdrop of its opposition to the European system of greenhouse gas emissions trading quotas (ETS), the European emissions credits regime, Russia has suspended this process. Additionally, 13 European countries are still facing discriminatory taxation for flights over Siberia, even though this should have ceased in January 2012. Furthermore, the Baltic states and Poland continue to see their authorisation to drive in Russia reduced. Discriminatory tariffs are also believed to apply to rail, to allow Russian ports to win out in freight transport. (MD/transl.fl)
