EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) syria

30/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - Catherine Ashton regrets breach of ceasefire. On Monday 29 October, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton deeply regretted that, after the initial decrease in violence in Syria during the holy holiday of Eid al-Adha, military actions were carried out by both sides in breach of the ceasefire. She said that she hoped that the parties will be able to agree to a future ceasefire, “which would provide the basis so that a political process can be developed and followed through”. Ashton repeated her full support for the work of Special Representative Lakhdar Brahimi, including his attempt to reach a ceasefire. Although the regime and main political opposition forces had accepted a truce for the 4-day Muslim holiday, Eid al-Adha, the violence quickly started again, claiming 400 lives. The two camps mutually accuse each other of being the reason for the non-respect of the ceasefire. (CG/transl.fl)
