29/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - Alain Cadec rapporteur on bottom trawling for his group. On Friday 26 October, MEPs from the EPP Group sitting on the fisheries committee at the European Parliament decided to appoint Alain Cadec (France) as the EPP rapporteur on the deep-sea fishing report (see EUROPE 10706 on European Parliament fisheries committee discussion). The Commission has proposed banning deep-sea fishing. “I think we need to act wisely and to listen to civil society, scientists and all the industry actors so as to have an objective vision and avoid all demonisation of this fishing. This approach will enable the Parliament to make a decision in full knowledge of the facts”, Cadec said. “Without waiting for the results of the studies that it has ordered, the European Commission is proposing a text which I think is too radical. Moreover, it is completely hiding some aspects of the file, especially the social section and numerous jobs generated by this sector”, he concluded (our translation throughout). Kriton Arsensis (S&D, Greece) is the rapporteur on the subject.
