David Cameron prepared to veto budget

Brussels, 19/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - After the European Summit on Friday, the British prime minister, David Cameron, said he was prepared to veto the draft European budget for 2014-2020. Asked for his country's views ahead of the next European Summit at the end of November to deal with the EU budget, the British prime minister said he would use his veto power if the draft budget were to include unacceptable increases in spending. He said it would not be acceptable to have a big increase in EU spending at a time when cuts are being made in national budgets, and the UK wanted a tough and rigorous approach in the budget talks. Cameron said that failing a good agreement for the United Kingdom, the United Kingdom would use its veto. He said that keeping the British rebate would be a vital. The talks on the EU's multi-annual budget for 2014-2020 will be the subject of a special summit on 22 and 23 November. In July, the European Commission unveiled a draft EU multiannual budget of €1,033 billion in commitment appropriations and €987 billion in payment appropriations, which would include the costs of Croatia joining the Union and would therefore be nearly 5% higher than the 2007-2013 budget.
