Juncker says no decision about Greece

Luxembourg, 08/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - Eurogroup will not be taking any decisions about Greece at its meeting on Monday 8 October because of failure by Greece to agree with its troika of lenders (the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank) about the details of a €13.5 billion package of savings to be made in order to receive the next instalment of aid, some €30 billion and the fact that the latest progress report by the troika on implementation of the structural adjustment programme has not yet been completed. The head of Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker, said one should never lose hope, answering a reporter's question on arrival at the meeting about whether a decision will be made later in the month, as set out as a policy objective at the Eurogroup meeting in Nicosia (see EUROPE 10689). Luxembourg's finances minister Luc Frieden said he backed the idea of giving Greece more time to implement the reform package as long as it didn't require too much more money. German finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble said the official visit to Greece this Tuesday by the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, was totally unconnected with the troika's work. (MB/transl.fl)
