Brussels, 08/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - Whilst congratulating Hugo Chavez on his re-election in the presidential elections of 7 October, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, called upon him to show responsibility. “With victory comes responsibility. In his new mandate, President Chavez must reach out to all segments of Venezuelan society to strengthen the country's institutions, and promote fundamental freedoms, inclusion and sustainable economic development”, Ashton stressed. She added that she is looking forward to working towards these objectives with the Venezuelan government.
The High Representative welcomed the high turnout for the presidential elections and the “calm atmosphere” on election day and following the issuing of the results. “This demonstrates the commitment to democracy of the Venezuelan people”, Ashton explained. She also praised all parties for the rapid acceptance of the results.
On 7 October, the 58-year-old Venezuelan won the presidential elections with 54.4% of the votes, against nearly 45% for his opponent, Henrique Capriles, according to results which have not yet been confirmed. The turnout rate was nearly 81%. Chavez, who has been in power since 1999, starts his fourth term in office in 2013, which will run until 2019. (CG/transl.fl)
