Brussels, 04/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 3 October, the European Commission said it had added two designations to the list of protected geographical indications (PGI). These are, for Slovenia, oil from gourd seeds - “Stajersko prekmursko bucno olje”, and for France, fresh sucking lamb meat - “Agneau de lait des Pyrénées”. These designations are added to the list of over 1,000 products that are already protected because of legislation on protected geographical indications, designations of origin and traditional specialities. With regard to the sucking lamb from the Pyrenees, the Commission underlines that confusion should be avoided with lambs produced on the slopes of the Spanish massif. The Commission has also settled the argument between France and Spain by forbidding the French indication to be translated into other languages. Spain contested the delimitation of the geographical area and the link between the characteristics of the product concerned and the massif of the Pyrenees. It said that the Pyrenees were not an exclusively French massif and that confusion was possible with products traditionally worked on the Spanish slopes, like the “Cordero de Navarra”, which already enjoys a PGI.
