Brussels, 01/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - Although the safety of plants operating in the EU is satisfactory overall, the final European Commission report underlines that many defects had been revealed by the stress tests.
The Commission says that there is “no room for complacency” with regard to the safety of the EU's nuclear plants. In a written declaration communicated to the press on Monday 1 October, Commissioner Günther Oettinger stated that, “our stress test were strict, serious and transparent” and reveals, “bluntly and objectively what we are good at and where there is a need to improve”. He said that although generally, the situation is satisfactory, there are “hundreds of defects”, particularly in France, according to the German newspaper Die Welt, which revealed, according to the Commission, €25 billion in work needed to establish compliance. The College of Commissioners will examine the recommendations of the Commissioner on 3 October, which will then be sent to the European Council on 18-19 October in Brussels. (EH)
