26/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - S&D group calls for launching accession process. On Tuesday 25 September, the president of the S&D group at the European Parliament, Hannes Swoboda, called for Turkey's accession process to be relaunched. Speaking in Ankara, Swoboda stressed that, “We need to intensify the dialogue between the European Union and Turkey. It is now time to relaunch the negotiation process, which aims to strengthen the stability and democracy of both the country and the region. New negotiations on the judicial system and civil rights (chapters 23 and 24 of the accession process) would help Turkey to strengthen the rule of law”. He also appealed for a new constitution that would allow Turkey to attain European standards and values. The meeting planned for Wednesday 26 September in Brussels between the European Commissioner for enlargement Stefan Füle and the Turkish Foreign Minister, Egemen Bagis, has been cancelled because Bagis was obliged to remain in Turkey that day.
