Planting rights, France finds plans insufficient

Brussels, 24/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - "I would like this regulation of the supply of vineyard plantations to affect both registered designations of origin and protected geographical indications, but also other wines", said French Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll, on Monday 24 September, regarding the ideas put forward by the Commission to the high-level group on wine (see other article). “Wishing to separate these wines and ordinary table wine is a mistake. We need to do more work on this subject”, he added. Admittedly, “progress has been made, the Commission has announced something, but I wish to go further”, the minister continued, stressing the existence of the platform initially made up of four countries (France, Spain, Germany and Italy) opposed to the removal of planting rights from 1 January 2016 onwards, and which has now been joined by Portugal, Hungary and Slovenia. Eleven member states have joined the platform in total, added Le Foll. (LC/transl.fl)
