Importance of integrating energy markets

Brussels, 21/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - Like their Spanish counterpart, the economic and social committees (ESC) of several Mediterranean countries (Algeria, Spain, France, Italy, Tunisia, Jordan and Israel) and representatives of the joint EU-Turkey advisory committee have published a common statement calling for integration of energy markets in the EuroMed area and interconnections of electricity grids.

The document is commented upon in the Spanish media and has been published ahead of the ESC EuroMed Summit in Amman (Jordan) on 17-19 October 2012 under the aegis of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).

The report highlights the growing importance of emerging economies and the need to set up new integrated economic zones. Setting up such integration in the EuroMed region would be a way of making the most of cooperation between the EU and its southern and eastern Mediterranean neighbours. (FB/transl.fl)
