EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) bahrain

06/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - Denmark takes its turn to express great disappointment at the Court of Appeal's decision on the human rights protesters. Like the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton (see EUROPE 10682), Denmark's minister of foreign affairs, Villy Soevndal, has said that the sentence of life imprisonment for the Danish-Bahraini human rights protester, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, and 19 other protesters is “very disappointing”. He said that he would discuss possible international action from “the broad range of countries that in the spring supported Denmark in the demand for the release of al-Khawaja and other human rights and democracy fighters in Bahrain”. Among the 20 protesters who were sentenced for wanting to overthrow the government, eight have been sentenced to life in prison - including al-Khawaja - and the other 12 have received punishment ranging from five to 15 years in prison.
