Brussels, 06/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 5 September EU missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah reiterated the EU's condemnation of “continuous settler violence and deliberate provocations against Palestinian civilians”. The missions said they were particularly concerned by the increasing number and severity of these incidents against Palestinians by extremist settlers in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
The EU missions welcomed the Israeli government's condemnation of these acts and its pledges of compensation. The missions also welcomed the legal proceedings and arrests which have taken place. They have asked for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and they “expect comprehensive measures by the government of Israel to prevent settler violence and to protect Palestinian civilians”.
The EU missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah have asked the Israeli government to comply with its obligations under international law, recalling that settlement activity is illegal. (CG/transl.fl)
