Brussels, 23/08/2012 (Agence Europe) - French President François Hollande and British Prime Minister David Cameron have said they are “100% in agreement” on all political, humanitarian and military questions raised by the Syrian crisis, it was announced on Wednesday 22 August by Cameron's cabinet office after a telephone discussion between the two men. The two leaders welcomed their “complete agreement” over Syria, the French side said.
Hollande and Cameron took the view that France and Britain must maintain their close cooperation and even work together more closely in order to “identify how they could bolster the opposition and help a potential transitional Syrian government after the inevitable fall of Assad”. The French president underlined his country's commitment to “provide effective support to the Syrian opposition, including on the ground”.
The two leaders discussed the “need to encourage the other world leaders to keep up international pressure” and welcomed the appointment of the new international mediator for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi. They spoke of the “appalling” situation of refugees from Syria and hoped the humanitarian situation would be the focus of the ministerial meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Thursday 30 August.
