Brussels, 21/08/2012 (Agence Europe) - Lasse Rosenkrands Christensen of Denmark has been appointed Head of the European Union aviation security mission in South Sudan (EUAVSEC South Sudan). He will take up his post on 1 September 2012, after being nominated by the EU Political and Security Committee on Tuesday 21 August.
The EU civilian mission, EUAVSEC South Sudan, which received the Council's approval on 18 June this year, aims to strengthen aviation security at the international airport of Juba, the capital of South Sudan. It will do this by training and providing a framework for security services, providing advice and assistance on aviation security, and by providing assistance with the coordination of security-related activities. The mission comes in answer to a request made by South Sudan and is part of the EU's strategy for helping South Sudan, which has been independent since 9 July 2011, to become a viable, stable and prosperous state.
