EU concern regarding future elections

Brussels, 21/08/2012 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission spokesperson, Catherine Ray, stressed, on Tuesday 21 August, how important it was to legally implement the law on the funding of parties by Georgian national authorities with a view to the parliamentary elections on 1 October, saying that the EU is “concerned” at the electoral environment which is “increasingly polarised and deteriorating”. She said she was keeping a close eye on the situation. The spokesperson also pointed out that it is important for the elections to comply with internationally recognised standards. The opposition group, “Georgian Dreams”, has said the country's authorities have frozen its bank accounts, thus preventing it from continuing with its political activity. (CG/transl.jl)
