Strasbourg, 04/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - MEP Doris Pack (EPP, Germany) called on the Croatian government on Wednesday 4 July to postpone its vote on the controversial law on public broadcasting “until the Commission's remarks are taken into account and an extensive public debate has been held”. Like the Commission, Pack criticises the law for not being sufficiently transparent, for allowing the government to appoint and dismiss the director general, and for giving him a large amount of power over management and programming decisions. She also asks why this law is being pushed through when the previous one had been adopted by consensus only 18 months ago. “Laws that were adopted as part of Croatia's accession negotiations were and remain crucial for EU entry and I trust this relatively young Croatian government to carefully consider the possible implications of opening such laws”, Pack said.
