More sustainable mobility, question of choice

Strasbourg, 04/07/2012 (Agence Europe) - Contributing to greener urban mobility is a question of making the right choice between the various modes of transport. With the launch of its “Do the right mix” campaign, which recommends changing citizens' behaviour in favour of alternative modes of transport to the car, the Commission is stressing this. The aim is to make European cities less congested and polluted by combining various modes of transport.

“We want to encourage people to vary the way they move around the city - so our slogan invites people to 'Do the right mix'”, Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas explained on 3 July. An envelope of €500,000 has been earmarked for this campaign, which will go beyond the borders of the EU, as Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Croatia are also involved. This European funding will support projects to promote an alternative urban mobility. Both associations and individuals may apply to receive up to €7,000 from the Commission to fund their actions in this field. “The campaign will give a boost to the local, regional and national awareness-raising actions that play a crucial role in creating and promoting this 21st-century culture of urban mobility. It is vital to promote diversity in our daily mobility choices”, said Kallas. The campaign will run for three years; it is closely linked to European Mobility Week, which will take place from 16-22 September this year. It will include “In town without my car!” day, a useful companion to the “Do the right mix” campaign. (MD/transl.fl)
