EU quarterly employment performance

Brussels, 27/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - “Subdued” is the adjective used by the European Commission, in its quarterly review published on Wednesday 27 June, to describe the current employment and social situation in the EU. Economic growth is weak, unemployment levels remain stable or are on the increase and youth unemployment is growing.

All indicators are flashing red, with the sole exception of the significant increase in the number of women in the labour market. “These latest data show that the employment situation and living conditions are deteriorating significantly in a number of member states. This underlines the urgent need for a robust solution to the current economic and financial crisis” and the need “for each member state to implement the country-specific recommendations and measures outlined in the employment package”, commented Laszlo Andor, Commission for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion.
