Drugs - Europe producing more and more cannabis

Brussels, 27/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - The market share of herb cannabis (marijuana) is increasing at the expense of that of cannabis resin (hashish), the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) announced on Tuesday 26 June, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. In a report published on Tuesday, the EMCDDA observes a cannabis market “in constant evolution” and a European continent, already a large consumer, which is also becoming a “major domestic producer” of this drug. According to the report, the increase in domestic production is also believed to be linked to an increase in violent behaviour and “increased criminality”, the EMCDDA goes on to state. Cannabis remains the most popular illicit substance in Europe, the monitoring centre points out, with more than 78 million Europeans (15-64 years) having tried it and some 9 million young Europeans (15-34 years) having consumed it over the last month.
