Brussels, 15/06/2012 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton has called for Egypt to clarify “as soon as possible” the exact consequences of the decision by the Supreme Constitutional Court on 14 June that the legislative framework governing the parliamentary elections was unconstitutional. She said she was following the situation “very closely”.
Ashton also called on all parties to ensure a “peaceful and transparent” environment for the second round of the presidential elections on 17 June. She again stated the importance of the transfer to civilian rule “as soon as possible, according to the announced timetable”. She highlighted the “fundamental importance of the democratic process and institutions, and the duty to protect basic human rights for all”, adding that “the Egyptian people must be able to determine their own future”.
The Supreme Constitutional Court declared voting in a third of the seats in the parliament to be invalid. It declared the composition of the parliament to be “completely illegal”. (CG/transl.rt)
